The National government, through State Department of Special Programme has provided humanitarian support to landslide victims of Nyarkulian Sub- location in Pokot South Sub County.
Speaking in Kabichbich on Tuesday, the area Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Fredrick Kimanga said the government has supplied 70 tents, 80 bags of rice, 40 bags of maize and beddings among others.
Kimanga said only three villages in the Sub location were affected by the landslide, adding that 12 people lost their lives while about 200 were displaced in the Sub county.
He said Lolwoi, Tiripach and Cheptonga villages were the most affected, with those displaced camping at Nyarkulian primary school.
“So far we are through with the rescue efforts, having recovered all bodies and nobody has been reported missing. The affected have been relocated to the primary school where about 50 people are camping,” said the DCC.
He further confirmed that medical personnel from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) are on the ground providing medical services to the affected victims.
Meanwhile, Kimanga has issued an alert to those still staying in risk areas and called on them to move to safer sites, saying the on-going rain might cause more disaster in the area.
“The area is still experiencing heavy rain and we shall not take any chances. We want to make sure that all the people staying in suspected risk areas are moved away until the rains subside,” he said
He added that most of the roads have been rendered impassable, saying this had made access to most affected areas difficult.
The MTRH team leader, Dr. Taabu Simiyu said two patients were released on Monday and the remaining will be released by the end of today, except one of them who will be referred to MTRH.
“We are sure that by the end of the day no patient will still be at Kapenguria Hospital as all will be discharged and only one will be referred to MTRH for further medication,” said Dr. Simiyu.
