Three people drowned in two separate incidences in Mbooni East Sub-county on Wednesday night.
In the first incident, a motorcyclist and a woman drowned when the motorcycle they were riding on was swept away by raging waters at Mutondoni Bridge in Ivumbu village Utuneni sub-location following heavy rains pounding the area.
The woman had closed her business at Syongungi market before she met her sudden death. However, her body has been recovered but that of the motorcyclist is yet to be found. The incident occurred at 9pm.
In the second incident, a 53-year-old man drowned and two others cheated death after the matatu they were travelling was swept by raging floods as they were passing Mukio Bridge last night.
The other two jumped out of the Matatu but the old man was washed away with the vehicle.
Makueni County Commissioner Mr. Maalim Mohammed confirmed the incident on Thursday and he cautioned wananchi against crossing seasonal rivers during this rainy season.
“Members of the public should not underestimate seasonal rivers. Particularly parents should take care of their children. Let the water subside before you cross the rivers,” he warned.
Consequently, Mohammed urged chiefs and their assistants to hold barazas and create awareness among the members of the public not to cross seasonal rivers during this period of flash floods in the area.
The body of the woman was taken to Tawa Hospital Mortuary while that of the man was taken to Makueni Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation awaiting post-mortem.
