Road Encroachers to be Wiped, Surcharged

The  Nyandarua County Commissioner (CC), Boaz  Cherutich has directed owners of illegal structures on road reserves to remove them, as Kenya National Highways Authority plans to roll out major repairs on County roads.

Cherutich while assuring the support of the security team in wiping all illegal structures encroaching road reserves regretted that the residents had resulted to selling their wares and erecting structures that obstructed motorists.

The  KeNHA representative, Amos  Muraya, told the County Service Delivery meeting sitting in Ol Kalau  on Wednesday that the market stores erected by the Nyandarua County Government in Mairo Inya and Nyakarianga along the Ol Kalau-Nyahururu road were also on road reserves.

“The roads extend from one marker post to the other and the open spaces are road reserves not abandoned property. Most traders always cite politicians as ‘allottees’ of the portions of roads they occupy,” said Muraya.

He also cautioned institutions against erecting bill boards without the consent of the Authority, saying they will be surcharged after demolition.

Muraya  assured the residents of Nyandarua that major repairs will be undertaken on the Gilgil –Nyahururu road that has been characterised by huge potholes at the Ol Jororok-Rurii and Ol Kalau-Kaptain stretches.

“We have engaged the contractors for emergency works as we seek funds to do major repairs. Motorists plying the Ol Kalau-Ndunduri road should drive slowly especially around bends as the recent dressing on the road chipped off at high speed,” noted Muraya.
