Three dead, 20 injured in Malindi accident

Three people including a woman and her child have been confirmed dead while 25 others are nursing various injuries following a grisly road accident at Gede along the Malindi-Mombasa road Saturday night.

Malindi Traffic Base Commander George Naibei said the accident involved a matatu heading towards Mombasa and a Malindi bound saloon car.

He said the car was speeding as the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle but unfortunately collided head on with the Matatu, killing him instantly. “A woman and her child who were in the car also died shortly afterward as they underwent treatment at Malindi Sub County hospital,” he said.

Mr. Naibei said police officers were still investigating to establish the cause of the accident and the actual number of passengers in both vehicles, as the number of the dead and survivors exceeded the capacity of the two vehicles.

He asked drivers to be careful especially during the festive season with a view to preventing loss of lives.

Malindi Sub County Hospital Superintendent Evans Ogato said the hospital received 25 accident victims, who were being attended to by medics.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Malindi Sub County Hospital mortuary pending postmortem and identification.
