The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has recovered public land worth over Sh1.6 billion in Kisumu County.
The recovery conducted by EACC Western Region office targeted parcels of government land illegally acquired by private developers.
Among the parcels recovered include Taifa Park valued at Sh370 million and three parcels of land that had been sold to the judiciary by a private developer where the Kisumu Law Courts sits valued at Sh830 million.
EACC Western Regional Manager George Oira said 20 other plots belonging to the Kenya Railways (KR) have also been repossessed.
Speaking during a visit to some of the recovered assets on Fiday, Oira said the repossession process was ongoing adding that more properties are set to be seized.
The recovery comes barely a month after Kenya Railways evicted traders who were operating on its land to pave way for the expansion of Kisumu Port.
A task force formed by Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o has identified a number of government parcels which are in the hands of private individuals.
The report which is yet to be made public, is expected to drive a major land recovery program as the county government looks for land to roll out affordable housing among other development programs.
Oira disclosed that EACC was actively investigating a number of graft cases involving county officials in the area who shall be taken to court and charged.
