Inua Mama Movement calls for BBI scrutiny

Women reps who are members of the Inua Mama Movement Friday called on Kenyans to scrutinize the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report and recommendations before committing to support it.
The members, who visited Isiolo and Marsabit counties Friday, said they would only support recommendations aimed at empowering women in the country and increase of resources allocated to the grassroots level.
Speaking in Isiolo, Kandara MP Alice Wahome said Kenyans should reject the BBI if it fails to address women’s interests and the spirit of devolution.
“Our movement stands and advocates for investment and capacity building of all women in the country,” Wahome said.
Malindi women rep Aisha Jumwa said Kenyans are not ready to go for a referendum since the country will spend a lot of money which is scarce.
She said government funds should instead be invested in hospitals and promote health standard for the citizens.
On her part, Laikipia women rep MP Catherine Waruguru, said any referendum should be initiated by Kenyan people and not two individuals to formulate the idea and have it implemented on behalf of the citizens.
She said the ODM party leader could be using BBI for his political revival as opposed to the will of the Kenyan voters.
“Political seats should be competitive and those seeking them must be ready to look for votes in general election,” she added.
Waruguru called for equal treatment of all corruption suspects and the government must not look like it is out to hunt and punish certain individuals.
Isiolo women MP Rehema Jaldesa said Kenyans are after development and not expansion of executive positions in governance.
She said the BBI could be a strategy to stop Deputy President William Ruto from succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“Our movement stands for the rights of women, disabled, the minority and just resource distribution to the grassroots. We will fight any initiative against what we have been pushing for and we will ensure Kenyans kick it out,” she added.
Others in attendance included Naomi Wako (nominated senator), Tana River women rep Rahima Hussein, Beatrice Nkatha (Tharaka Nithi), Anab Subow (Garissa) and Halima Mucheke (nominated MP) among others.
