Disaster team formed

A disaster management team comprising the national government officials, Kenya Red Cross and other agencies has been formed in Elgeyo Marakwet.

The  team according to the County Commissioner (CC), Dr. Ahmed Omar  will from next week embark on assessment of areas prone to disaster and especially those at risk of experiencing landslides.

The  Kerio escarpment is prone to landslides during heavy rains with the latest incident being the killing of a family of four who were buried by a landslide as they slept on Friday night.

The  CC  was  speaking at Chepkorio in Keiyo South after reading the President’s speech during celebrations to mark this year’s Mashujaa Day.

He expressed concern over the high number of school girls getting pregnant in the county, saying 1,049 girls were reported pregnant between May and July this year terming the situation as alarming.

The CC  called for concerted efforts from parents, religious leaders society and teachers to reverse the trend.

Dr. Omar said the government had advertised for all the vacant chiefs’ positions in the county, saying they will be filled soon to improve service delivery.

The  area MP, Daniel  Rono called on women, youth and people living with disabilities to apply for loans through the Uwezo Fund to start income generating activities.

He  lamented the money was lying idle in the office, saying that the CDF office had hired a person to assist them write proposals to ensure that as many groups access the funds.

Rono  advised the youth  whatever their level of education to enroll in technical training institutions to gain skills that will enable them apply for funds to start income generating activities to earn a living.
