Property worth millions of shillings was on Sunday night reduced to ashes after a mysterious fire razed down a Boys’ dormitory at Marmanet Mixed High School in Laikipia County.
The inferno that is suspected to have been started by students saw about 100 students affected after their valuables were consumed by it.
Following the incident, the School’s Board of Management (BOM) and education officials decided to send form 1, 2, and 3 students home as they work out a way forward.
However, form four candidates who are preparing for KCSE examination set to start early next month were not affected with the education officials promising to assist those who were affected by the inferno.
“The students have been sent home as the board of governors looks for alternative accommodation. Only candidates have been left behind to prepare for examination,” said Canon Joseph Wainaina, the school’s BOM vice chair.
Area MCA, Kimani Kanyutu promised that the county government would take urgent measures to ensure that student resume learning promptly.
“We are also asking the government to move with speed and ensure that the cause of fire is established immediately,” added the ward Rep who also hailed the county fire brigade for responding promptly to contain the fire before it spread to other buildings.
Confirming the incident, the Nyahururu Sub County Assistant County Commissioner, Frida Kawira said that investigations have been launched to establish the cause of the fire, adding no casualties were reported during the incident.
