Uasin Gishu Women Representative, Gladys Boss Shollei has urged Kenyans to reject attempts of going for referendum by any means.
Speaking in Ol Kalou Town during Nyandarua County during Inua Mama Initiative, Shollei advised residents to be wary of the development of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and Punguza Mzigo proposals running within the country.
According to the women rep, the proposals were just a ploy to deduce a referendum which would mean a complete change of the constitution unlike an amendment which would only deal with change in certain sections of the constitution.
“Referendum is a way to diminish the power of the National Assembly, extend the term of office for President, introduce a seat for Prime Minister in the executive and remove devolution,” said Shollei noting that these were the reasons for politicians pushing for a referendum.
The lawmaker told the public that the Government had no resources to fund a referendum and urged the people not to forget that the Country was deep in debt and could therefore not afford such an expense which she termed unnecessary.
She emphasized that it wasn’t admissible that Kenyans enter into debt in order to fund a referendum.
Taita Taveta Women Representative, Lydia Mizighi, also advised Kenyans to be wary of politicians who are selfish and only seek to use Kenyans to benefit themselves.
Mizighi gave the example of Taita Taveta Governor, Granton Samboja who faced impeachment over his arrogance.
Prior to his impeachment, Samboja said that he would petition the President to have the County Government dissolved following a fall out between the Governor and the Members of County Assembly over budget impasse.
