Keeping the clean city promise

Mombasa County Government through the Department of Environment, Waste Management and Energy added ten new garbage collection trucks to boost the coastal city’s sanitation standards.

Governor Hassan Ali Joho flagged off the trucks on Wednesday in a new wake of the County’s effort to maintain Mombasa as a clean and healthy environment for its residents as well as a desired tourist destination.

Speaking during the launch, the governor said his government envisioned a 100 per cent garbage collection by end of the year from the current 52 per cent.

He said the new trucks each has a capacity of carrying 25 tonnes which translates to 200 tonnes of garbage every day.

“The additional trucks will inject a new garbage collection of 200 tonnes to the already existing daily collection of 12 trucks which were launched last year in the first phase of keeping Mombasa the cleanest city in the region.” said Governor.

The governor pleaded with the national government to repair the Mwakirunge road that is in a bad state and was damaging trucks when ferrying garbage for disposal.

He said a lot of county resources were being directed to repair and maintenance works of these trucks, since the road is impassible and garbage must be taken out of the city.

Joho said it was everyone’s responsibility to maintain a clean environment where people should exercise hygiene and proper sanitation by avoiding illegal dumping to keep Mombasa clean.
