The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) has hailed the Njuri Ncheke council of elders for offering a piece of land for the construction of a cultural centre and relocation of the Meru Museum.
Speaking at the Museum in Meru town on Wednesday, the Director NMK Dr. Mzalendo Kibunja appreciated the donation of 200 acres of land at the Nchiru Shrine to relocate the Meru National Museum from the congested town and construction of a cultural centre.
Dr. Kibunja reiterated that the reason to relocate the Museum has been necessitated by demands for enough space by the virtue that Njuri Ncheke’s Nchiru headquarter has the cultural value to the Meru community.
“ The establishment of this museum and cultural centre does not only preserve our cultural heritage but also act as a point of fostering national unity as various and diverse people interact when they visit the site,” said the NMK Director.
He added that it would also generate good income to the government because it will be a site for attracting both local and foreign tourists.
The Meru Chairman of Njuri Ncheke, Linus Kathera said that the council greatly appreciates the relocation of this facility to its Nchiru headquarter.
He added that this would add value to the council because as people visit the Museum they will learn more about the cultural judicial system of the Ameru.
Kathera called for both National and County governments to support the Njuri Ncheke to construct modern house unlike the hut model they traditionally built.
The Chairman further said that Njuri Ncheke embraces dynamism to accommodate both the elites and the youngsters in the society.
In the same breath, the Meru Governor, Kiraitu Murungi promised that his government would give Sh.15 million this year and Sh.15 million next year for the relocation and reconstruction of the Museum.
