Joy engulfed Iruri village in Mathira Constituency, Nyeri, when Machakos Governor, Alfred Mutua, came knocking to hand over a house he built for a poor blind couple.
As the rains, continue pounding many parts of the country leaving a trail of destruction, Christopher Muchoki, 65 and his wife, Jacinta Gathigia, 62, can now sleep easy following the development.
The couple and their 13 children aged between 20 and 40 has been living as squatters on a make shift house before Governor Mutua stepped in, constructed and furnished the two bedroom house valued at over Sh. 2 million.
Luck came knocking at the door of Mzee Muchoki when Mutua was on a campaign trail for his Maendeleo Chap Chap Candidate for the Ruguru Ward by-election, concluded two weeks ago.
Mutua said he had gone to pay a visit to Muchoki, who was an ardent supporter of his party and policies, only to realize he was blind and living under deplorable condition.
“On visiting Muchoki, I was touched by his plight and decided to do something that would put a smile on his face,” said Governor Mutua said, while handing over the keys for the newly built house to the couple.
The house was constructed in 10 days using the latest technology that is more efficient and cost effective according to players in the construction industry.
Mutua also assisted the couple to get medical treatment that helped to partially restore the eyesight of Muchoki’s wife.
The couple could not hide their joy for the blessing with Muchoki thanking the governor devoutly for his gesture that has changed his welfare big-time.
Several well-wishers also chipped in to help make the house habitable by furnishing it as well as putting other installations such as solar water heating system.
Peter Muthee of Anchor Group of Companies, who assisted in furnishing the house, challenged others to follow the example set by governor in assisting needy in the society.
A philanthropist, Rachel Kihumba, said she was glad to be part of the project that has gone a long way in changing the fortunes of a needy couple.
