Patients continue to suffer as health workers endure with strike

Most  patients in Nyando Sub County continue to suffer due to the ongoing strike by health staffs after Kisumu County refused to pay their three month’s salary.

A  spot check by KNA in several public health facilities on Tuesday in the morning showed that the main patient’s waiting bay which is usually full was empty as most patients sought treatment from private institutions

Patients  whom we interviewed at Ahero Sub County public hospital said they are unable to get medical attention as nurses avoided the institution.

Many patients who came to the public hospital and were not attended to sought treatment in private institutions.

Most  patients were forced to return home after realising the health workers could not offer their services to the residents.

They  are now calling on the National Government to intervene and ensure critical health services are provided to reduce their suffering.

“Let the Government address the issue so that normality is back in most public hospitals. This will enable us to receive their needed services,” said Mike Okinyi, a patient.

Efforts to get comments from the administration failed but the nurses we interviewed and refused to be quoted said they will only provide their services after being paid their dues.

“We are in October and our three months’ salary is still pending. We want the county government to pay us our dues so that we can get back to work,” said a female nurse who refused to be named for fear of reprimand.
