Thousands of youths in Kisumu are set to secure jobs if a bill proposed by the executive sails through the county assembly.
The Kisumu County Roads Bill 2019 which is before the assembly provides for the establishment of roads’ maintenance teams where the youths shall be engaged.
The Kisumu Governor, Prof. Anyang Nyong’o said the teams shall oversee routine maintenance of roads in the area to ensure they are passable throughout the year.
Speaking to the media in his office, the governor said the initiative was part of his government’s plans to provide employment to the youths and ensure that they are actively engaged in development of the county.
“We have had problems with roads in this county especially during the rainy season which we want to address by having these teams in place,” he said.
The road maintenance teams, he disclosed shall work under the supervision of Village Councils which are set to be established.
The bill seeking to establish the village councils as required by the County Governments Act 2012 is also pending before the assembly.
The Kisumu County Assembly Leader of Majority, Kenneth Onyango said the two bills which are before the relevant house committees shall be fast racked to ensure that youths secure jobs.
In an interview with KNA, Onyango said the leadership wrangles at the assembly which derailed service delivery had been resolved expressing optimism that the bills shall be dispensed with soon.
Members of the assembly recently ousted Speaker, Onyango Oloo and replaced him with Elias Oraro in acting capacity. The changes also swept through key house leadership positions.
