Police in Mombasa will deal firmly with criminals terrorizing residents ahead of holy month of Ramadhan. Muslims across the World are set to start observing the holy month on Wednesday next week.
The County Police Commander (CPC), Johnstone Ipara has therefore urged the public to support security agencies in the fight against crime in the coastal city.
He said they have taken steps to heighten security across the coastal city and there would be visible police deployments at places of worship day and night.
Ipara urged the public to continue reporting insecurity and drug trafficking cases to the police in order to eradicate crime in the tourist resort city.
Speaking during an interview on Thursday, Ipara said police officers will be carrying out night patrols to ensure faithful attend prayers in mosques without hitches.
He urged residents to embrace community policing initiatives stressing that security was not the preserve of the police but is the responsibility of everybody.
Ipara hailed Likoni sub county residents for their collaboration in the Nyumba Kumi Initiative which he said has improved security in the area.
The CPC said the past week, police in collaboration with the public arrested 22 people suspected of drug trafficking and taken to court to face drug charges.
He said members of criminal gangs who have been fighting each in recent months on the streets in turf wars have reconciled and vowed to be law abiding citizens.
“We welcome those who seek reconciliation but we are also ready to defeat gangs,” he said.
He said police will not allow gangs to take control of the communities and threaten social cohesion.
