The Government, through the Ministry of Devolution plans to roll out relief distribution exercise to 24 hunger stricken counties in the next one week.
Speaking at Oletukat area in Narok East yesterday, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Devolution Charles Sunkuli said the worst affected counties included Wajir, Mandera, Tana River, Baringo, Marsabit, Narok, Samburu and Kajiado.
Sunkuli assured Kenyans that the Ministry of Devolution will be working closely with the Ministry of Interior in the distribution of the relief food as well as water in the adversely hit areas in order to ensure that no one dies of hunger.
He said the Ministry of Education will also be largely involved to ensure children in the affected areas continue learning.
Most parts of the country received very little rain this year making it impossible to grow food. Livestock too, have been adversely affected with pastoralists being forced to migrate in search of pasture and water.
Leaders who accompanied the PS called on politicians to tone down on the 2022 political campaigns and instead focus on matters of National cohesion and development.
Former PS for information Joseph Ole Musuni said that as leaders they are fully behind President Uhuru Kenyatta in his efforts to conserve Mau forest as the effects of drought have already been felt following its destruction.
He urged leaders to stop politicizing the Mau eviction issue but instead allow and support conservation.
He further said that all constitutional issues need to be handled in a sober manner adding that as leaders they are hopeful that Building Bridges Initiatives (BBI) report will carry the interest of all the communities in the country.
Former internal security Minister and Diplomat Julius Sunkuli urged the Narok County assembly not to support the Punguza Mzigo initiative pointing out that they should wait for the BBI draft.
Sunkuli called on the Maasai community to remain calm adding that they would soon come up with a political outfit that will be the voice of the community.
The leaders vowed to forge unity amongst the Maa community in Narok, Samburu and Kajiado counties.
