Fisherman drowns in Lake Victoria

A 30- year old fisherman drowned in Lake Victoria after sliding from the boat at Sindo main beach in Suba South Sub County following heavy windstorm Sunday evening.

The fisherman, identified as George Otieno, met his untimely death after he slid from the boat and drowned over strong waves while removing the anchor which had held the boat when he was casting their net during a fishing expedition.

The deceased, who was in the company of three other fishermen, was overpowered by water after heavy waves hit their boat and he could not manage to swim resulting in his drowning.

Confirming the incident to KNA, Homa Bay County Beach Management Unit Network chairperson Edward Oremo said that the three fishermen who were in the same boat watched helplessly as their colleague was being swept away by the waves since he drowned in the deeper section of the lake.
Oremo decried the high number of fishermen who drown while on fishing expeditions saying in the last three months, they have lost more than six fishermen whose bodies have not yet been recovered in various beaches within Lake Victoria.

The search operation to retrieve the body of the deceased has commenced. He called on well-wishers to assist them with finances for fuel to power the search motorboat.
