Police in Isiolo have arrested a primary school teacher alleged to have impregnated a Class Seven girl in Oldonyiro, Isiolo County.
The teacher was arrested on Thursday after local leaders led by County Parents Teachers Association Chairman, Ismael Galma raised concern why legal action had not been taken against the teacher despite the girl reporting the matter at Oldonyiro Police Station a week ago.
Galma alleged that the teacher planned to quietly sort out the matter with the minor’s parents but instead a teacher at the girl’s school broke the news to the County Director of Education, Dr. Hussein Keriyow and his Teachers Service Commission counterpart during a meeting.
The Isiolo County Police Commander (CPC), Joseph Kigen said the suspect, who is being held at Isiolo Police Station, will be arraigned in court once the investigations are over.
Local leaders and human rights activists alleged the teacher bribed the local administration, the girl’s parent and security team who were silent on the matter.
“The suspect has been hiding in nearby village since the girl reported the matter the first week of September,” he said.
The Vice Chairperson of Isiolo Public Service Board, Ms. Lucy Mworia said that the act by the teacher was very bad and police should have taken action two weeks ago.
“We want action taken, we will not allow teachers to continue taking advantage of young girls who they are supposed to protect,” said Ms Mworia.
She added that due to looming drought some people take advantage of young girls’ poverty in some families and warned that she would not accept such crime to happen and go unpunished.
