Former Kenya Railways Corporation workers have appealed to the government to investigate the cause of perennial delays to remit their pensions.
The retired workers, led by Siaya Kenya Railways retirees branch secretary, John Awuor Anyango lamented that they had not received their dues for the last three months.
Addressing the media in Siaya town on Thursday, the senior citizens said they could not meet their financial obligations, adding that an attempt to get explanation over the matter had hit a snag.
“We cannot afford our medical bills and other family needs due to the delayed pensions that have accumulated for months” said Anyango.
He said that the Kenya Railways staff retirement benefit scheme had enough assets that generate a lot of income, adding that it was high time the government investigated the management. “The Kenya Railways Staff Retirement Benefit Scheme has assets that are being disposed day in day out,” he lamented.
Anyango who spoke on behalf of the over 800 former railways employees wondered why retirees from other state corporations were receiving their pensions promptly while they were left to languish in abject poverty.
