Four people Monday perished at Kaptein area on Nyahururu – Ol Kalou road in Nyandarua County in a road crash involving a personal car and a lorry.
A fifth victim is fighting for his life at the JM Memorial Level Four Hospital, with the medics citing his condition as critical.
According to Nyandarua County Police Commandant (CPC) Dr Gideon Ngumi, the saloon car driving towards Ol Kalau town swerved while evading a pothole, hitting an oncoming lorry.
“Three unknown male passengers died on the spot while two, a female and a male adult, were rushed to JM Memorial Hospital where the female was pronounced dead on arrival,” added Dr Ngumi. He added that the driver of the lorry escaped unhurt.
“We have launched our investigation but initial findings are that the accident was caused by the pothole,” added the CPC.
Dr Ngumi urged motorists and drivers using the road to be extra careful and called on the respective government agencies to address the state of the road.
Following the midday accident, angry residents barricaded the busy road paralyzing transport for some hours.
The irate residents demanded immediate repair of the road citing a series of crashes in the recent past.
They decried poor workmanship by the contractor on road saying “It is less than three years since the road was re-carpeted and its condition keeps deteriorating day in day out”.
The four were taken to JM Memorial Level Four Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem and identification.
