Some of the schools in Marakwet might not access clean water as the heavy rains being experienced in the area swept away water pipes connecting them to the water source.
According to Elgeyo Marakwet County Director of education Joseph Wamocho, the schools in Kerio Valley including Queen of peace, Tot mixed and St. Paul Kapkondot girls school will not access clean water as the pipes supplying water to them were swept away by floods while toilets in some other schools sunk.
St. Alphonsus Mutei high school, Kipka and Mutant primary schools have sunken toilets and scores of other toilets in different schools are almost filling up after the water table rose because of heavy rains.
Marakwet East sub county education director Kimutai Chirchir said on Thursday all primary schools have been opened at his sub county but turn up was still low owing to the rains and impassible roads.
He asked parents to help children get to schools especially the young children in pre-primary who may not be able to cross swollen rivers.
The county director of Metrology Simon Cheptot said the rains will continue and advised teachers and administrators of schools in dangerous zones to be cautious.
“There are schools located at places where soils soak in water and if their toilets are still standing, pupils have to be very careful because the toilets might cave in with just a little weight, similarly, areas especially the escarpments and the hanging valley are equally dangerous because of rock falls,” he warned.
