National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) in Tana River County has indicated that Tana Delta Sub-County recorded the highest school dropout rate cases in 2018 by recording 3 percent cases in primary and 1.2 percent in secondary schools.
According to the NDMA July news bulleting report, the cause of high dropout rate was as a result of lack of school meals programme, inadequate teachers, early marriages and pregnancies.
The report signed by NDMA Tana River County Coordinator Mr. Abdi Musa states that in term two, in 2019, 105 students dropped out of school in secondary schools and 650 pupils dropped out of school in primary schools.
According to the report, school meals programme was now being implemented in all 177 schools in the County and benefits a total of 54, 890 pupils but in the second term, schools in the Sub-County did not receive food from the Ministry of Education affecting 20, 954 pupils.
The report says, this contributed to the decrease in enrolment and retention of pupils in schools adding that, lack of water for cooking the food was another challenge being experienced in schools.
