Korane threatens to sue KenGen over floods

Garissa County Government has threatened to sue the power generating company KenGen over massive destruction of property following the spillage from the Kindaruma dams that left over 2,000 families displaced.
Making the announcement, area Governor Ali Korane said they will ensure they have a water tight case with concrete evidence that can stand trial.
Korane added that the lawyers handling the case suggested that they use various experts from agricultural and environmental sectors both from the past and present damages.
He further revealed that the process was at evidence collection stage and optimistic that soon they will sue the company to ensure they get compensated for the past and present and caution themselves from future damages.
“We are gathering the necessary evidence to ensure that the case is water tight. We shall use experts in water, agriculture, environment and all other agencies to ensure that we succeed,” Korane said.
“This is not a matter of public relations. This time round KenGen must be held responsible for the massive damages to our people’s property,” he added.
The governor was speaking Wednesday after flagging off a consignment of food and learning equipment for ECD centres. He later received non-food items from the UNHCR in Garissa office.
Korane said as much as the company was doing a noble job of generating power for Kenyans, they should be mindful of the big population living downstream along the river.
According to the Kenya Red cross, at least 15,000 documented people have been affected by raging floods over the past one week with most farmers losing their pumping sets and farms produce that was ready for harvesting.
