Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi welcomed a high-level delegation from the French Development Agency (AFD) at his Thika office marking a crucial step in efforts to enhance living conditions in informal settlements across the county.
The delegation, led by AFD Country Director Anne Gael Chapuis and MEDEF (Mouvement des Entreprises de France) Vice Chairman Gerald Wolf, engaged in in-depth discussions on the Second Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project (KISIP 2).
The initiative seeks to upgrade infrastructure in informal settlements through improved roads, drainage, street lighting, water and sewer systems, and tenure security for residents.
AFD’s funding has already facilitated transformative infrastructural improvements in Thika, Githurai, and Limuru, directly impacting thousands of residents.
During their visit, the delegation toured Umoja informal settlement in Hospital Ward, where they saw firsthand the progress of ongoing projects. Notable improvements include the construction of concrete-paved link roads, the installation of integrated solar streetlights, and the development of drainage systems. These interventions are reshaping the settlement, fostering a safer and healthier environment for residents.
The visit provided an opportunity to assess the project’s impact and reaffirm commitment to sustainable urban development. Joining the discussions were key county officials, including CECM for Land, Housing, and Urban Development Salome Wainaina, Chief Officers Daniel Njenga and Martin Kangiri, as well as community representatives. Their collective efforts underscore Kiambu’s dedication to sustainable urban growth.
Beyond infrastructure, these projects symbolize hope and resilience, paving the way for a future where every Kiambu resident can thrive in a dignified living environment.
