Busia University of Eldoret Students Association has led a clean-up drive at Soko Posta Market in Busia town.
Speaking on behalf of the students, the association’s patron, Prof Paul Odwori, said that the move was a way of giving back to society.
“This is the second time we are carrying out such an exercise. We were here last year for a similar exercise, and we are planning to make it an annual event,” Prof Odwori said.
Odwori added that the student association also carried out environmental activities like tree planting within the county.
“Apart from this, the students also visit learning institutions and talk to students as they encourage them to work hard,” he said.
Soko Posta market chairperson, Philip Okwero, lauded the students for the initiative, adding that daily cleanup of the facility has been a great challenge.
“Ideally, cleaning up this facility should be carried out by the market management; however, they have not been allocated any funds,” he said.
Okwero stated that the county leadership has always insisted that the market management make local arrangements to ensure the cleanliness of the facility.
“So, you will find that this place is cleaned only once in a week yet it operates daily,” he said, adding that traders complain about the poor state of the market since they pay revenue.
He further said that his efforts to access the Governor over the issue have been in vain.
“Just the other day I talked to the leadership of Busia Municipality, who promised to source for a development partner who can fence and improve the status of this market,” he said.
