Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County is undergoing a facelift ahead of hosting this year’s national Madaraka Day celebrations.
Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS), Salim Mvurya, said the project will cost Sh 500,000 and is expected to be completed by 20th May this year.
He said it involves putting up new terraces with a seating capacity of 10,000 around the main pitch.
To ensure that the stadium meets the specifications to enable it to host the national event, the National government partnered with the county government of Homa Bay to improve the stadium.
The CS was accompanied by Homa Bay Governor, Gladys Wanga, who officially handed over the project to the contractor that is undertaking the project.
The CS stated that President William Ruto had instructed government officials in charge of the project to allocate funds and resources for the stadium’s expansion.
“I am here to officially hand over the site to the contractor,” the CS announced.
According to the CS, the stadium, which is under renovation, will be ready for use by mid-May, and it has a pavilion with a seating capacity of 2000 people.
“It will be used for Madaraka Day celebrations and other sporting activities. Work will be done to the highest standards,” said the CS.
The CS asked the construction company at the site to consider hiring locals.
“The government is also undertaking other similar projects in Bukhungu and one will begin in Siaya,” said the CS.
Governor Wanga lauded the government for selecting Homa Bay County to host the national celebrations event.
She stated that the improvements to Raila Odinga Stadium will be made to meet international standards.
“We will be able to host multiple sporting events here,” said Governor Wanga.
