Police in Kitale have re-arrested a 25-year-old man who escaped from police custody after he was arrested last year in November.
Area County Police Commander (CPC), Samson Ole Kine told the press in his office on Wednesday that Wilberforce Omondi had been shot by police in the leg at Mitume, after stealing goods from AP officers on November 13, 2017.
“After his arrest, the suspect was taken to Kitale Referral Hospital for treatment and thereafter for prosecution, but he escaped”, he said.
Efforts to re-arrest him were futile as neighbours at his rental estate in Matisi had told police that he had moved to unknown place.
“On Tuesday, we managed to re-arrest the suspect at Tuwan when members of the public reported his re-appearance to police,” he said.
“The man will be taken to court where he will be charged with burglary and stealing and escape from lawful custody,” he said.
Meanwhile, police have launched investigations into an incident in which one man was shot dead by people he was with at Matisi primary school, yesterday.
According to Kitale OCPD, Jackson Mwenga and three other people were riding on the same motorcycle and upon reaching Tuwani primary, an argument on unknown subject ensued and one of them was shot dead as the assailants escaped.
He added that shortly after, the two fled from the scene using the same motorcycle.
“Locals who heard distress calls from one of them responded and called in the police who rushed him to Kitale County Referral Hospital”, he said.
The OCPD told the press in his office that the victim succumbed to excessive bleeding while receiving treatment.
He was shot at the right side of the chest and on an upper arm.
Mwenga said police could not salvage any information from the victim before he died.
