The National Government’s civil servants 200 housing units project in Machakos County that cost of Sh.706 million is in its final stages
This was revealed by the County Director of Housing, John Irungu Nderitu while briefing the Machakos County Development Implementation and Coordination Committee (CDICC) during a meeting chaired by the County Commissioner (CC), Mrs. Esther Maina at her boardroom.
The committee members also toured the extensive project located at the Bomani area near Machakos prison.
Nderitu said the project comprises several flats with 100 two-bedroomed units and an equal number of three-bedroomed units. He disclosed that the project which is being undertaken by M/s Veevee Enterprises Limited will be completed in October after the company requested for an extension of term following some challenges.
“The project is on course at 84% completion. Construction is on-going and the contractor is on site. Utility connections such as sewer lines, water and electricity are also on-going,” Mr. Nderitu told the meeting.
Once completed, Nderitu added, 160 units would be sold to the civil servants while the remaining 40 would be rented out to tenant civil servants.
“Though the initial completion date was to be last June, the contractor requested for an extension after some unforeseen circumstances delayed the commencement of works,” Mr. Nderitu explained. For instance, he noted, the shortage of timber that was caused by the Government moratorium on the product and the heavy 2017 rains.
He said the project which is in line with the Government’s Big Four Agenda would go a long way in providing adequate and decent housing for civil servants and also create employment.
At the same time, Nderitu urged Kenyans to embrace and register with the online Boma Yangu housing project which promises to provide 500,000 affordable houses for them. He said the project, a government initiative, is one of the pillars of the Big Four Agenda which ensures that low and middle-income households have access to decent and affordable housing.
Also at the meeting was the Lower Eastern Director of Delivery at the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU), Larry Mulomi, the Deputy County Commissioners, the County Security team and selected departmental heads.
