Village in mourning following death at sandmine

A somber mood has engulfed Nyangera village in Bondo sub county, after a 48-year-old man was buried alive at a sand mining site early this morning.

According to police report, the body of the deceased Francis Oduor Otuka, was discovered by his brother Michael Odianga Otuka at around 11 am who raised an alarm and reported the incident to the area village elder Mr John Amenya.

According to Odianga, the deceased is believed to have been alone at the sand mining site when the sand pit walls collapsed and buried him.

Bondo sub county Deputy Police Commander, Mr Julius Kemboi, confirmed the incident and said police visited the scene and found the body buried in a heap of sand after they were alerted by the village elder Amenya.

Kemboi said that the body was removed to Bondo sub county referral hospital mortuary pending investigations into the incident.

He appealed to members of the public from the area to volunteer information about what may have transpired at the mines during the incident.

Kemboi also cautioned residents of the area from undertaking sand mining activities without following approved guidelines to avert such incidents.
