Bodaboda riders to help curb crime

Bomet police have called on bodaboda riders to play a key role in curbing criminal activities in the county.
Bomet commander of police Naomi Ichami made the appeal Tuesday at the County headquarters saying the riders could access information that if tapped, could provide leads to curb crime.
Ms. Ichami said the riders operated day and night and were often used by perpetrators of crime for transportation, saying they could be in the know of potential criminals and could thus provide vital tipoff to the police.
“We know that bodaboda people are most often aware of suspicious people within us. Most of them are also used to transport stolen goods and in that connection, they should be empowered so that they can assess the baggage they are to transport,” she said.
“We are working around the clock to ensure that we visit all the sub-counties in Bomet with the aim of educating the riders on the need for cooperating with the police to rid the county of criminal elements,” she added.
The call came about against a backdrop of increased crime rate in the county where incidences of car theft, robbery with violence, burglary and sexual offences were rampant.
The County residents have however shown intolerance to the criminals as demonstrated by the lynching of two suspects in June at Kapsimbiri area, while another suspected burglar was beaten to death by an angry mob near Bomet town.
