North Eastern Regional Commissioner John Otieno has assured residents that their security would be guaranteed during this festive season.
Otieno said the residents should carry on with their businesses without fear of any security threat but appealed for their cooperation by reporting any suspicious activities to the police for swift action.
The regional commissioner was, however, quick to warn the residents against issuing alarming statements, especially on social media, which would threaten peace and order.
“Security is a responsibility of each and every individual. To this end, I want to appeal to members of the public to provide any information to members of the security sector in case of any situation that requires their attention,” he said.
“At the same time, I want to also ask members of the public to stop issuing alarming statements that would jeopardise our security measures,” he added.
Otieno was speaking at the Government Guest House in Garissa town during the end-of-the-year party with the regional heads of departments that was used to take stock of the achievements and how to address them going forward.
“During this festive season, criminal activities, among them home burglaries, traffic offences, and loud music during night hours, will be on the increase and may interfere with peaceful celebrations. In our region, terrorism threats are likely to go up,” Otieno said.
“Our security agencies have put measures in place to make sure that residents of this region celebrate the December and January festivities in a peaceful and secure environment. We are prepared to deal with any emergency insecurity incident or anybody breaking the law,” he added.
The regional commissioner further noted that all the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) have been directed to quickly coordinate and act on any emergencies.
