Over 500 farmers in Bondo Sub County received one-month-old chicks from the Anglican Development Services Western region to enhance their economic livelihoods.
According SUSTFARM+ project coordinator John Ashitiva reported that 2300 chicks were distributed to farmers in various sakwa wards and East Yimbo, aiming to improve the nutritional status of the beneficiaries.
“We have given chicks to 16 groups and one school in Bondo that they can grow and sell and also consume both the chicken and the eggs as away of ensuring the farmers are supported both economically and on food and nutrition,” said Ashitiva
Ashitiva announced a three-year pilot project in Siaya, Kakamega, and Bungoma counties, starting in 2022.
Ashitiva said the project not only aims to increase the knowledge of farmers on agroecology and climate smart agricultural practices and nutrition but also build their capacity in various value chains which they are currently undertaking.
The project will encourage farmers to take care of the chicks to maturity and allow multiplication as a way of ensuring sustainability.
On the other hand, Consulate Achieng Juma a resident of Bondo village and beneficiary of the project expressed gratitude saying the project has empowered their members to venture into poultry farming which they could not do initially.
Achieng stated that the poultry project will enable economic growth and enhance their living standards.
