Boda boda operators urged to collaborate with security agencies

Western Regional Commissioner Irungu Macharia has urged boda boda operators to work closely with security agencies in order to improve security.

Speaking during a boda boda sensitisation forum in Busia on Friday, Macharia noted that the operators rise up very early and close their business very late at night.

“’We want to thank you for ensuring that there is peace and security in your areas of operations,” he said, adding that they reach areas where security officers cannot access.

He promised that the government will work closely with the boda boda leadership at all levels.

The RC advised security officers to ensure confidentiality of information shared with them by boda boda operators so that they are not threatened by suspects.

Macharia at the same time urged the riders to obey traffic rules and avoid being at loggerhead with the law enforcement officers.

“All the riders should ensure that they have helmets, insurance, and a riding license and carry one passenger at a time,” he said.

He further said that the government will soon register boda boda riders digitally for ease of identification.

“We want to work closely with you in order to reduce human trafficking, illegal trade, drug trafficking, and trade in illicit brews along the border,” he said.

Macharia thanked the Ugandan leadership for working closely with the Busia County security team in reducing theft in motorcycles.

The RC reminded the riders to register with the Social Health Authority in order to access health services.

He also urged parents to take good care of their children during the holidays so that they do not engage in activities that can destroy their future.

Bodaboda Safety Association of Kenya National Chairman Kevin Mubadi said that the sector is working closely with the government.

‘Boda boda is a reformed sector, and we want to assure you that we will work closely with security officers in order to reduce cases of insecurity,” he said.

Mbadi urged the RC to advise County Security teams to work closely with boda boda leadership.

He reiterated that all the riders should register with SHA so that they can benefit from health services.

The forum brought together the Western Regional Security Team and boda boda leadership from the Western Region.
