Over 20 schools in Laikipia County have received water tanks to mitigate drought and enhance farming efforts.
The 100 water harvesting tanks were donated by Brooke East Africa in Partnership with Laikipia County under the patronage of Laikipia county development Authority Chairman Dr. Allan Mugambi.
Brooke Action for Working Horses and Donkeys is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting animal welfare.
Speaking to KNA in Muramati location, Laikipia County during the distribution exercise, Dr. Mugambi noted that the water tanks would ensure learning institutions had access to water for irrigation instead of overworking donkeys to fetch water which was a violation of animal rights.
‘’We are helping people with water challenges for them to protect animal rights, specifically donkeys which are overburdened. Learning institutions and churches will benefit with 100 water tanks in Laikipia to help them relieve donkeys from the work of ferrying water,” said Dr. Mugambi.
Koome Kiragu, Laikipia county coordinator for school feeding program, urged educational institutions to practice farming to provide nutritious meals to students, preventing hunger-related dropout rates.
Schools are encouraged to adopt sustainable farming practices as they may not always receive relief food for their learners.
Laikipia East Assistant County Commissioner Kimberley Champagne called on teachers to embrace climate smart agriculture technologies to boost their productivity, emphasizing that farming would supplement government feeding programs in local schools.
The teachers expressed gratitude to donors, stating that water tanks would help address water shortages in the area, particularly during dry spells.
