Expectant mothers in Busia urged to seek early, consistent antenatal care

Busia Deputy Governor Arthur Odera has urged expectant mothers to prioritize early and consistent antenatal care in order to reduce premature birth risks.

Odera who doubles as the CECM for Health and Sanitation stated that such mothers should seek regular medical consultations and follow professional advice.

“Reports reveal that preterm births account for 20 to 30 % of babies in this County,” he said.

He expressed confidence that the healthcare facilities across the County are prepared to support premature infants’ survival and future health.

Busia County head of Pediatrician Dr. Emma Namulala cited underdeveloped physiological systems as one of the major challenges that expose infants to multiple complications such as respiratory issues, cardiac challenges, vision problems and difficulties with nutrition and weight.

A representative of Nutrition International, Juliet Nduta urged expectant mothers to adhere to use of Iron supplements (IFAS) and fortified food throughout their pregnancy period which helps with anemia prevention and early loss of pregnancies.
