Mosop farmers receive incubators to boost poultry farming

Six farmer groups in Mosop Ward, Rongai Sub-County have received a significant boost to their poultry farming ventures.

Nakuru County government distributed 176-egg automatic incubators, backup generators, and fertilized eggs to each group as part of its initiative to promote poultry farming in the region.

The beneficiaries include Kanini Kega Women Group, Blessings Kerma Women Group, Joy Widow Women Group, Young Generals Self Help Group, Berur Self Help Group, and Kapkatet Upendo Self Help Group.

The County Executive Member (CEC) for Agriculture Leonard Bor while issuing the incubators today said, county government aims to enhance nutrition security and income generation for smallholder farmers through this initiative. By providing these essential tools, the government hopes to stimulate poultry production and improve the livelihoods of local communities.

Roseline Mutai, the chairlady of the Joy Widow Women Group, expressed gratitude for the support, stating that the incubators will significantly increase their poultry production.

She emphasised that the increased production will lead to higher earnings and improved living standards for the group members.

While incubators offer a promising avenue for poultry farming, poultry experts have always highlighted the dangers of improper care. Neglecting maintenance and hygiene can lead to various issues, including: Poor temperature and humidity control can adversely affect embryo development, leading to lower hatching rates.

Bor advised the farmers to ensure proper cleaning and disinfection to avoid diseases, which can spread to the entire flock. Also, he urged them to maintain optimal temperature and humidity by using accurate thermometers to monitor conditions as needed.

Additionally, he said by following these guidelines, farmers can maximize the benefits of incubators and contribute to the growth of the poultry industry in the region.

The distribution of incubators was led by Agriculture CEC Bor, accompanied by Chief Officer for Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Services Dr Michael Cheruiyot, Mosop Ward MCA Alex Lagat, and other county officials.
