Minor Rescued from Early Marriage

An eleven-year-old girl was rescued after she was married off to a fifty-year-old man in Barsaloi village in Samburu North Sub County.

The minor who had been married for one week was rescued on Tuesday by her elder brother after he discovered that she had been married off by their parents.

“I met my small sister in Barsaloi shopping Centre after school and when she told me that she has been married I knew it is not right and I had to rescue her,” said the brother who is a form three student.

Samburu Central Officer Police Commander Alex Rotich said that the brother contacted Samburu Girls Foundation (SGF), a rescue centre for girls and later, together with his sister, secretly took a boda boda from Barsaloi to Maralal town.

Rotich said that the 50-year-old man has been living in Mombasa and after returning home he decided to marry the minor as his first wife.

“We are looking for him together with the girl’s parents so that they can answer for their crimes,” he said.

Pascalina Naibash who works for Samburu Girls Foundation commended the brother for the rescue saying that girls deserve to be treated equally as boys.

“The girl has never been taken to school but all her brothers are in school including the one who rescued her. This is what we fight against every day,” said Naibash.
