The  Tharaka Nithi County Development Implementation Coordination Committee (CDICC) has directed the contractor for an access road to show cause why a project that he was scheduled to be complete by the beginning of  June should not be cancelled and given to another contractor.

During  a  site visit of the  project dubbed ‘Upgrading to bitumen standards and maintenance of access road to Chuka University on Tuesday, the CDICC noted that there were no convincing reasons why the project that kicked off in June 2017 is only 25.41% complete.

Briefing  the CDICC on arrival at the starting point of the project Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) Regional Deputy Director, Eng. Peter Mwangi  Wachai disclosed that lack of approved programme of works and personnel, erratic payment of salaries and shortage of fuel at site as the major contractual issues affecting progress.

“Resident  engineers and contractors’ teams have been receiving salaries in an erratic manner with some awaiting arrears of more than six months which has caused go slows among the workers,” said Eng. Wachai.

It  is on this premise and actual observations on the ground that the CDICC led by its Chairperson Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner (CC), Ms. Beverly Opwora directed the Engineer on site representing the contractor, M/s Westbuild General Contractors Ltd that his employer will be summoned to show cause why the contract should not be terminated and tendered to a competent company.
