The government will construct grade 9 classes for all schools in Elgeyo Marakwet by January next year when schools open for the first term.
The Keiyo North director of education Alice Sitienei who was speaking on behalf of the county director said there were some schools which already have the classes adding that the NG-CDF will construct classes for schools that don’t have.
She was addressing the National Government Development-County Management and Implementation Oversight Committee (NGD-CMIOC) meeting which was chaired by the county commissioner John Korir in Iten.
Ms. Sitienei therefore assured parents the government was doing all it can to ensure that grade 8 learners have a smooth transition to grade 9.
She told the meeting that the department was ready for the national examinations which will start later this month saying trainings were going on for all those involved in administering the examinations.
Addressing the same meeting, the county director of housing Daniel Nyaigo said the Sh.54 million Iten Economic Stimulus Programme market was 49% complete adding that the market whose construction started in May this year was to be completed in November but the contractor applied for a 60-day extension period which was granted.
Nyaigo said the delays were occasioned by delay in payment and the weather which led to the contractor scaling down on the works but said he was optimistic that the market will be completed within the extension time.
The director said businesses in the area have received a major boost as a result of the market as materials were being sourced locally adding that they had already identified jua kali artisans who will be engaged for fabrication.
He further said that the government under the Affordable Housing Project will construct hostels for Chepsirei, Kapcherop and Kiposen technical training institutions and the Kerio Valley University which is under construction.
