Duale warns against banning Muslim school girls from wearing Hijabs

The  National  Assembly Majority Leader, Aden Duale has cautioned head teachers in his constituency against banning Muslim school girls from wearing Hijabs.

Duale  who is the Garissa Township MP said the ban was violating the constitutional rights of the school going girls.

Duale  was reacting to last month’s incident where seven students from Thaara Secondary School in Murang’a County were sent home when they wore Hijabs in school.

Speaking in Garissa town on Monday, Duale said as leaders from the region, they will not allow that to happen as it amounts to religious discrimination.

He  said all religious faiths and their beliefs, including what they wear have been recognized by the constitution.

“I want to forewarn head teachers that they should not dare ban our children from schools because of wearing a hijab. Anyone who dares do that will find it rough with us the Muslin community,” Duale said.

On  Saturday, the majority leader accused the Supreme Court of ignoring the right to freedom of worship provided by the Constitution. He appealed to Muslims to ignore the ruling.

Ruling on a technicality in January this year, the Supreme Court overturned a Court of Appeal ruling that allowed Muslim students to wear hijabs in public and church-run schools.

The court said students are not free to wear hijab in non-Muslim schools said schools can decide their dress codes.

Immediately after the ruling, Muslim leaders led by Supkem urged Muslims to ignore the Supreme Court ruling on hijab, saying that the constitution provides for freedom of worship.

They accused the Supreme Court of ignoring the right to freedom of worship provided by the Constitution, appealing  to Muslims to ignore the ruling.
