The just ended teachers strike called by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education teachers (KUPPET) did not affect schools in Homa Bay County according to the County Education Director Eunice Khaemba.
MS Khaemba said her office received daily briefs indicating that learning in the county went on smoothly.
She said there were no reports of any students being sent home on account of the teachers’ strike. “Teaching may however not be 100 per cent because some teachers were on strike,” the Director said.
Meanwhile the Homa Bay County Education Network Coordinator Julius Omuga expressed concerns that the strike will have a negative effect on the performance of learners who he feared might fail to cover the syllabus this term.
Omuga said it was regrettable that some schools had assigned interns and teachers employed by the board of management to take charge of the curriculum. “All teachers should be in class teaching, the trend of leaving the duties to a few teachers is counterproductive,” he said.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Treasurer Beatrice Awiti accused their employer of threatening the striking teachers.
