Homa bay County Area Advisory Council members have cited poverty and disco matangas (overnight dances during mourning) as some factors that contribute to the rising teenage pregnancy in the region.
The members regretted that Homa bay county came second on teenage pregnancy with 38 per cent of girls who gets pregnant at a tender age. Narok is first at 40 per cent
Speaking Friday during the Area Council meeting held in Homa bay town, the Homa bay county coordinator of Programs in the County Commissioners office, Gabriel Othina said that the disco matangas were already banned in the county and called on chiefs to enforce the ban.
She added that the teenage mothers living with HIV have been assigned caretakers to monitor their health progress.
