Migori MP launches sanitary towels to boost girls’ retention in schools

Migori Women Representative Fatuma Mohammad has launched a bursary and sanitary towel kitty to boost girls’ retention in school.

In keeping with the initiative launched by County Women MPs across the country, Fatuma stated that the initiative will enable school-going girls to access education for the betterment of future generations.

While launching the initiative at Migori Primary School, Fatuma said that 642 schools in the county would benefit from the sanitary towel initiative with 74,715 girls targeted by the programme.

The legislator also disclosed that her office will be disbursing over Sh7 million worth of bursaries to assist students in the county to further their education.

She further added that through the Fatuma Foundation, they have established a small plant to manufacture reusable sanitary pads to boost distribution in girls’ schools.

Migori County Gender Officer Kennedy Oomo said that the partnership between the Ministry of Gender and the Office of the Woman Rep will continue to provide sanitary towels to school-going children to protect their dignity.

Oomo urged gender stakeholders and the political class to continue fighting for the elimination of the ‘triple threat’ of new HIV infections, Gender Based Violence and teenage pregnancies for a better society.
