More than 150 golfers are participating in the 32nd edition of the Njuri Ncheke golf festival at the Nanyuki Sports Club, which is aimed at showcasing Ameru culture.
The Njuri Ncheke golf festival, which is marked annually, has drawn home golfers and others from the counties of Meru, Laikipia, Nyeri, and Nairobi who are taking part in the 9-hole course this weekend.
“We are celebrating the Ameru culture to conserve it through golfing and enjoy things that Ameru people do when celebrating something,” said Njuri Ncheke festival organising Chairman Jedio Muriungi.
Muriungi said that the event further started with a junior golfer’s tournament targeting to inspire them and nurture their golfing skills.
“Children aged three to 21 are taking part since we want to produce champions in the future. The kids are very excited, and golf will be their thing,’’ pointed out the chairman, adding that for junior golfers, it was their second edition, which was also gaining popularity among the young people.
The tournament, which is the oldest in the Nanyuki Sports Club, will mark its 32nd year today, where more than 3200 golfers have participated since it was started.
The festival kicked off last year after a two-year COVID-19 pandemic hiatus.
This year’s edition has attracted sponsors including Isuzu Motors and the Housing Finance Corporation (HFC), among others.
Additionally, the participants will be treated with Ameru traditional food.
