In a significant humanitarian effort, the government has distributed much-needed relief assistance to 5,000 people affected by recent cross-border conflicts in Sololo, Marsabit County.
Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALS) and Regional Development Principal Secretary Kello Harsama led the distribution exercise, which included both food and non-food items aimed at alleviating the suffering of those affected by the violence.
The food items, consisting of maize, rice, beans, Uji mix, and cooking oil, were accompanied by non-food essentials such as blankets, solar lights, and mattresses.
During the exercise, PS Harsama emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting communities in the ASAL regions, particularly during times of crisis.
“We stand with the people of Sololo during this difficult period,” he said. “Our aim is to provide immediate relief and support while long-term solutions are developed to ensure stability and peace in the region.”
He also expressed gratitude to the security agencies for their swift and effective response to the recent conflicts.
“The presence of our security forces has been instrumental in stabilizing the area and allowing for the safe delivery of humanitarian aid,” he added. “Their efforts have been vital in creating a safer environment for the affected communities.”
In light of the recent conflicts, PS Harsama urged residents to embrace peaceful coexistence and dialogue as means to resolve disputes.
He underscored the importance of unity and understanding among different communities as the foundation for long-term peace and development in the region.
“I call upon all border communities to work together towards fostering peace and harmony. Only through collective efforts can we build a stable and prosperous future.” he said.
The distribution of relief supplies in Sololo is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to supporting its citizens during challenging times and underscores the importance of peace and security for the development of the region.
The residents, who have been severely impacted by these conflicts, recently endured an incident where a rocket-propelled grenade was fired into a homestead near the border before security forces repelled the attackers.
