Student killed another injured in Marakwet

A  form  four student  at  Tot  Secondary  School  was shot dead while another person was injured in  Tot  division of  Marakwet East Sub County.

The  deceased who was a form four candidate was going home at around 7.00pm friday aboard a motorcycle with his colleague when they were shot at.

Confirming the incident, the Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander (CPC), John  Mwinzi said police had launched investigations into the killing.

He however, said the police were treating it as murder and dispelled reports that it was as a result of the never ending cases of cattle rustling among communities living in the area.

The  CPC  said he was on a tour of the area to assess the security situation, saying it was calm and that security had been beefed up.

Following  the incident, the deceased colleagues at Tot secondary staged a demonstration walking 37km to the Deputy County Commissioner’s office at Chesoi to demand for their security.

This  is the third student to be killed in the area in a span of three months. A student who had just completed school at Tot secondary and was set to join and another from Queen of peace secondary school were killed within this period.

The  students led by Philemon Kipkorir lamented that no one has been arrested following the killings and that they were studying in fear of more killings, noting that this was affecting their studies.

The students said they will not attend school until their security was assured, a point which was supported by the KNUT Executive Secretary Marakwet branch, John  Cheberi who called on teachers and students to boycott school.

Cheberi  said effective learning cannot go on in an environment full of fear adding that this is unfair to students in the area who will have to sit the same examinations with other students countrywide who are continuing with their studies.
