Students charged with torching their dormitory

Five students of Koimbi High School in Kahuro Sub County were on Tuesday arraigned before a Murang’a court facing charges of burning a dormitory at their school.
The students who appeared before Principal Magistrate Edwin Nyagah denied charges of burning an 80-bed capacity dormitory at the school in July, 2019.
According to the charge sheet, the suspects are said to have led a demonstration which led to destruction of properties including students’ boxes, clothes among others estimated at cost of Sh. 4.7 million
Police had arrested 10 Form Four boys but after investigations they zeroed down to five students who were charged with arson.
The students who are waiting to sit for national examinations in November were each released on a Sh. 200, 000 with a similar surety. Their case was scheduled to be heard on December 6, 2019.
In the same court, the prosecution applied to detain a murder suspect for 14 days so as to complete investigations on the case facing him.
Antony Kimani, a matatu conductor is facing charges of killing Margaret Waithera on July 7, at her shop in Kandundu area, within outskirts of Murang’a town.
The prosecution told the court that the suspect was arrested on Monday and police are yet to finish investigations before he is charged with murder.
The case investigation officer Abdalla Ali requested the court to give police 14 days so as to conduct psychiatric assessment of the suspect.
The magistrate granted the application directing Kimani to be held at Murang’a police station until July 18, when his case will be mentioned.
The prosecution was ordered to ensure the suspect is taken through psychiatric assessment before the scheduled mention date.
The body of Waithera was found lying in a pool of blood on Monday at her shop where she was living.
