Inadequate teacher training has been identified as a major obstacle against the full implementation of the Digital Learning Programme in public primary schools.
Meru County Development Implementation Coordination Committee was informed on the challenge during its numerous tours of schools which had been issued with the DLP devices to fast track ICT integration in schools.
Led by County Commissioner, Allan Machari, the committee visited Abothuguchi primary school where the school had 42 devices and a projector but only three teachers were adequately trained.
Machari said the committee had taken the responsibility of escalating the need to train more teachers for deployment in all public primary schools in the area for the government to achieve the objective of having ICT compliant learners before joining higher levels of education.
The school head teacher, Gideon Kiara said although the three trained teachers were willing to assist all learners in the school from grade one to standard eight, the burden was too heavy for them and was likely to compromise on the overall performance.
Kiara also said besides handling the ICT devices, the three teachers were expected to deliver on their normal workload on the school timetable like any other of their colleagues hence reducing the time they have to assist learners in using the devices.
Area Curriculum Support Officer, Faith Ngechu appreciated support provided by county ICTA officials, saying were always available to assist in the servicing of the devices whenever need arose in all the schools.
Among the committee members was Meru County Director for Education, Milton Nzioka.
