A landslide struck the homestead of a retired teacher in Tuturung, Sambirir Ward, Marakwet East Sub-County, claiming the lives of two individuals and leaving another injured.
The incident, which occurred around 0210hrs, was attributed to heavy downpours that have been persisting in the region.
The victims, identified as Kipkoech Suter, aged 23, and Kiprop Suter, aged 16, were tragically engulfed by the landslide and succumbed to its force.
Additionally, Agnes Suter, a 52-year-old female, was fortunate to be rescued by neighbours but suffered from chest pain as a result.
She was promptly rushed to Kapsowar Mission Hospital for medical attention where she remains under observation.
The bodies of the deceased have been preserved at the same medical facility, awaiting autopsy procedures.
Speaking on the grim incident, Edmund Nyaga, the Assistant County Commissioner (ACC), expressed sorrow over the loss, stating, “It is with heavy hearts that we confirm the loss of Kipkoech and Kiprop Suter in this unfortunate landslide.”
Nyaga further highlighted ongoing efforts to mitigate such occurrences, stating, “We have been conducting sensitisation barazas in collaboration with local chiefs, urging residents in landslide-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds.”
He noted that these educational initiatives, initiated earlier in the week, aim to raise awareness and prevent future tragedies.
In response to the disaster, Governor Wisely Rotich swiftly mobilised the County Disaster Response Team and the Red Cross to provide immediate assistance to the affected family and community.
Governor Rotich conveyed his heartfelt condolences, stating, “I wish to convey my sincere condolences and that of the entire county for this unfortunate incident. May their souls rest in Peace.”
The governor emphasised the importance of preemptive action in the face of such natural disasters, urging residents of landslide-prone areas to heed warnings and consider relocating to safer grounds.
He reiterated the county government’s commitment to supporting affected families during this trying time.
