Muslims in Samburu County wants the government and Kenyans at large to stop associating Islam with terrorist groups such as Al-Shabaab.
Ahmed Farah, the Chairperson of Samburu Muslim Community, said innocent people of Muslim faith face discrimination and harassment whenever they travel in groups to other areas.
Farah said that Muslims are also forced to report to the Chief, OCPD or OCS whenever they receive visitors coming from out of the County.
“We respect the law and the security measures put in place but our non-Muslim brothers ought to understand that Islam is a peaceful religion that respects people’s lives and property,” he said.
Farah was speaking at Maralal Jamia Masjid Mosque where children from four counties including, Isiolo, Laikipia Samburu and Marsabit met for a Quran reading competition.
The Mwangaza Secondary School Principal, Abdi Kadir Ismael said the competitions are healthy to children as they promote good character, peace and integrity among children as they grow.
He called upon parents in the region to facilitate both formal and religious education for the children in order to bring up a good society.
“If as parents we teach our children about God the current problems we are currently facing such as corruption, crime and discrimination would not be there,” he observed.
Harsa Mohammed, a 15 year old girl from Marsabit County, won the Quran reading competition.
